PSA: Don’t Upgrade to iOS 14 Yet on Music Making Devices!

iOS 14 came out yesterday. Dino and Metlay who are heavy into iOS music production always caution people to never upgrade major iOS updates on music making devices till you verify down the road that what you use actually works. It’s good advice, especially with 14.

I took an iPad to 14 to test and after 5 minutes of testing had issues with some audio effects in AUM loading “red” and when I try to reload them it crashes AUM.

I recommend you hang back on your music making devices till things shake out!

If you do decide to try it, read articles on how to backup and restore to 13 (which isn’t really that straight forward).

  1. Thanks for the heads-up. Unfortunately, I already pulled the trigger.
Though with gigging currently limited to live streaming, my only mission-critical iOS app for that environ is BandHelper. And it seems stable on iOS 14, with the only detected exception of crashing when doing lotsa editing of automation events.
Rather than backtrack, I’ll probably just hope that each music app catches up with the OS by the time I really need them to be stable.
